Foot Facts |
- The foot has 26 bones, 33 joints and over 100 muscles, ligaments and tendons from the knee down. These are responsible for the movements the foot makes while walking.
- During a walk, each foot repeats the same movements over and over. These movements come together to create the gait cycle.
- A gait cycle consists of heel strike, mid stance and propulsion (pushing off the toes).
- During mid stance one foot is on the ground and the opposite foot is in swing phase. The foot on the ground is bearing all of the body's weight.
- During swing phase, the foot receiving impact is bearing 1/2 times the body's weight.
- During a run, the bearing weight is 3 to 5 times the body's weight.
- During impact sports, that weight bearing number rises to as much as 8 to 10 times the body's weight.
- With each weight-bearing increase the risk of injury also increases.
